		The Last Day of August
		-------------------------------------------------------

today the wind has a southern skin
		and recalls my lover's breath
		-- three years ago --
		a mouth dry from kisses
a mouth dusky like the heart of Nigeria
my lover was the heart of Nigeria

we loved each other for three scorching months
inseparable like a man and his black shadow
my fingers woven into the meat of his hand
my lungs singing with his breath
my white hand brushed the hair off his dusky forehead
at night his head next to mine blossomed like
		                                  a subtropical flower

he told me of the gentle nights of Nigeria
of an ocean that licks the golden sand coasts
of stars that fall into cupped hands
of palms with fronds like open hands
I listened not tearing my mouth away from his hand

		three years ago

		the ocean left me
the golden sand coasts turned dark
the golden stars went out -- muggy New York nights
		my body turned cool
		and only sometimes
in a sky white from the chill
the wind ignites a merciless black sun

		ostatni dzien sierpnia
		-------------------------------------------------------

		dzisiaj wiatr ma pol/udniowa/ sko/re/
		i przypomina oddech mojego kochanka
		-- trzy lata temu --
		usta suche od pocal/unko/w
		usta ciemne jak serce Nigerii
		mo/j kochanek byl/ sercem Nigerii

		kochalis/my sie/ upalne trzy miesia/ce
		nierozl/a/czni jak czl/owiek i jego czarny cien/
		moje palce wplecione w mie/so jego dl/oni
		moje pl/uca s/piewaja/ce jego oddechem
		bial/a/ re/ka/ odgarnial/am wl/osy z ciemnego czol/a
		noca/ jego gl/owa obok mojej kwitl/a jak
		                                   podzwrotnikowy kwiat

		mo/wil/ mi o l/agodnych nocach Nigerii
		o oceanie kto/ry liz/e wybrzez/a zl/otego piasku
		o gwiazdach spadaja/cych w nadstawione dl/onie
		o palmach kto/rych lis/cie jak otwarte dl/onie
		sl/uchal/am nie odrywaja/c ust od jego re/ki

		trzy lata temu

		odszedl/ ocean ode mnie
		pociemnial/y wybrzez/a zl/otego piasku
pogasl/y zl/ote gwiazdy -- parne noce New Yorku
		moje cial/o ostygl/o
		i tylko czasem wiatr
		na niebie bial/ym z chl/odu
		zapala bezlitosne czarne sl/on/ce
